Hot Foil vs Spot UV vs Embossing: Cost Guide

 News    |      2026-09-19

If your budget allows only one finish, decide it this way: hot foil for a small logo on dark board, spot UV for large-area contrast over a matte base, embossing when the artwork is essentially monochrome and the box needs to feel expensive rather than look expensive. These three are priced on completely different logic, which is why the same design file can move a quotation by a wide margin.

Where the money actually goes

Hot foil stamping presses a thin metallic layer onto the surface through a heated metal die. It carries two separate charges: the metal plate itself, which is a one-off tooling cost per artwork and per colour, and a small per-unit charge for the press pass. Because the plate cost does not shrink with quantity, foil is proportionately expensive on short runs and becomes reasonable once volume spreads it.

Spot UV lays a clear gloss coating onto selected areas over a matte base and cures it under ultraviolet light. It adds no colour at all — the effect is entirely contrast. It is billed largely by coverage area, so a logo costs very little while a full-panel pattern costs several times more. There is no metal plate, which is why it is the cheapest of the three to start.

Embossing raises the surface with a matched male and female die, creating relief you feel rather than see. It adds no ink and no foil, so material cost is almost nil — what you pay for is one extra production pass plus the die set. This makes it the most quantity-stable option: the per-unit figure moves far less than foil does between 500 and 5,000 pieces.

Three combinations that disappoint

Large-area foil over a large-area UV. The two effects cancel each other: the gloss flattens the metallic reflection, and you pay for both. If you want presence across a panel, pick one and let the other stay small.

Foil on very fine lines. Hairline strokes below roughly 0.3 mm tend to break up during transfer, because the foil does not release cleanly from a narrow heated edge. The artwork looks sharp on screen and ragged on the box. Thicken the strokes before approving, not after.

UV placed across a fold line. UV coating is a cured film with limited flexibility. Put it where the board creases and it can crack along the fold. Keep a clear margin on either side of every crease — this is a layout decision, and it must be made before the plates are made.

Three ways to spend a limited budget

MidFoil logo + blind emboss on the same markRegistered detail, clearly premium

Two questions worth asking your supplier

First: is the plate or die set charged separately, or already inside the unit price? Some quotes fold tooling into the unit rate, which looks cheaper at 500 pieces and more expensive at 5,000. Second: does the quoted coverage assume your current artwork, or a generic allowance? A revision that doubles UV coverage after approval will change the price, and it is easier to settle that before sampling than after.

Finishing is the part of a packaging quote most easily misunderstood, because the same drawing can be produced three ways at three very different costs. Sending the artwork with the finish marked on a separate layer lets a factory price it accurately the first time.
