FOLDABLE RIGID BOX · FLAT-PACK Foldable Magnetic Gift Box
Lid-and-base rigid box · Magnetic closure · 500 pcs MOQ |
This is a rigid gift box that folds flat. It looks and feels like a set-up box on the shelf — wrapped, V-grooved, magnetic — but it travels and stores as a flat panel, then stands up in a few seconds at your end. The reason to choose it is usually freight and storage, not the box itself. |
01 / WHY FLAT
The volume difference, in numbers
Freight is billed on volume, not weight, for most sea and air consolidation. On a lid-and-base box, that works against you badly — you pay to ship air.
| Box 25 x 25 x 8 cm | Enclosed volume | What you pay for |
|---|---|---|
| Assembled | approx. 5.0 L | The full outer envelope, mostly air |
| Flat-packed | approx. 0.3 L | The folded panel only |
| Difference | roughly 16x | Same box, different shipping state |
The 16x figure is geometry — it is the outer envelope of the same box in two states. How many units actually fit in your container depends on carton layout, pallet pattern and whether you ship assembled or nested, so we confirm the real count at quotation rather than promising a number here. What is certain: the flat-pack route cuts first-leg freight per unit and takes your off-season storage cost close to zero. |
02 / STRUCTURE
How it stands up without glue
Greyboard panels are V-grooved along the fold lines and wrapped in one continuous sheet of paper. The box folds along those grooves and locks at the corners with interlocking tabs — no adhesive on the corner joints, which is also what keeps the structure mono-material.
| Component | How it is built |
|---|---|
| Body panels | Greyboard, V-grooved at each fold line, wrapped in a single sheet so the wrap has no seam at the corners. |
| Corner lock | Interlocking tuck tabs hold the four corners square once the box is raised. |
| Lid | Full telescope lid, folding on the same principle as the base. |
| Assembly | Raise the panels and press the tabs home. No tools, no tape, no instruction sheet needed. |
03 / CLOSURE
Magnet position matters more than magnet strength
A magnet that is too strong makes the box awkward to open; too weak and the lid drifts open in transit. We tune it, but the more common failure is placement.
| Check | What we do about it |
|---|---|
| Placement | Magnet slots are kept clear of the fold lines. Opening across a fold loosens the board layers around the magnet over time. |
| Closing feel | Force is tuned to open one-handed but stay shut in transit — confirmed on a physical sample, not on paper. |
| Transit | Loaded boxes are drop-tested before we sign off a structure. |
| For the EU | Magnets are supplied unsealed and press-fit, so they can be lifted out by hand and the metal separated from the paper at recycling. |
04 / MATERIALS
Board weight and wrap
| Layer | Common specification | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Greyboard | 800 / 1000 / 1200 / 1500 gsm | Rigidity and the weight in the hand. Around 1200 gsm is the usual balance for cosmetics and skincare. |
| Wrap | 128 / 157 gsm art paper | The printed surface. Heavier wrap resists scuffing but adds little stiffness. |
| Alternative wraps | Soft-touch, textured, kraft | Handfeel and positioning. Soft-touch and textured stocks change how foil behaves — see below. |
| Insert | Paperboard, moulded pulp or EVA | Sized to your actual product, not to a drawing. Moulded pulp and paper keep the build plastic-free. |
05 / FINISHING
Logo treatment, and one thing that catches people out
| Finish | Notes from the floor |
|---|---|
| Hot foil stamping | The usual first choice for a logo, and strongest on dark solid stocks. On soft-touch and some textured papers the surface coating reduces foil adhesion, so we run a test during sampling and adjust temperature or switch to blind embossing. |
| Blind embossing | Raises the logo with no colour at all. The reliable option when foil will not hold on the chosen stock. |
| Spot UV | Gloss accents over a matte base. Keep it off the fold lines — the coating is rigid and cracks when the board is creased. |
| Aqueous coating | Water-based, replaces lamination film. This is what keeps the box recyclable under EU PPWR. |
| Lamination | Durable and scuff-resistant, but it is a plastic film bonded to paper — it makes the box a composite. We flag this before quoting if you sell into the EU. |
06 / COMPLIANCE
Built for the EU market
Under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, "paper" on its own is not enough. A sorting line has to be able to recognise and process the whole box.
| Element | Our default build |
|---|---|
| Structure | Mono-material — paper and board throughout, no plastic layer bonded in. |
| Coating | Water-based, replacing lamination film. |
| Magnets | Unsealed and press-fit, removable by hand so the metal separates at recycling. |
| Corners | Interlocking tabs instead of adhesive. |
| Documentation | Material breakdown and Declaration of Conformity support; FSC-certified board on request. |
One honest caveat: a paper-based box is not automatically compliant. The full structure has to be assessed — board, coating, magnet, insert and closure together. We review that with you during sampling, not after production. |
07 / ORDER
Minimum quantity, sampling and lead time
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| MOQ | 500 pieces per size. |
| White sample | Unprinted, structural only — free of charge. You cover shipping. This is the point to check size, insert fit and how the box stands up. |
| Printed sample | Run on the same press and paper stock as bulk, so colour holds into production. |
| Lead time | 7-12 working days after artwork approval and deposit. Longer for complex builds or peak season, confirmed in writing first. |
| Tooling | Cutting dies made in our own die shop. Your tooling is stored and is not re-charged on reorder. |
| Shipping terms | EXW Shenzhen by default; FOB, CIF and DDP available on request. |
08 / FAQ
Questions buyers ask before ordering
How much freight does flat-packing actually save?
It depends on your route, carton layout and whether you ship assembled or nested. The volume difference per unit is about 16x on the box shown above; the real per-container count we confirm at quotation rather than estimate here.
Does it look like a proper rigid box once assembled?
Yes — it is wrapped greyboard with V-grooved folds, so on shelf it reads as a set-up box. The folded state is visible only before assembly.
Will the lid stay shut in transit?
We tune the magnet and drop-test loaded boxes before approving a structure. If your product is unusually heavy, tell us the weight up front so we can specify accordingly.
Can I have lamination and still sell into the EU?
Lamination bonds plastic film to paper, which makes the box a composite and creates a problem at sorting. For EU shipments we recommend water-based coating instead. If you need lamination for durability on non-EU markets, we will quote it and flag the trade-off.
What files do you need?
Vector artwork in AI, PDF or EPS, CMYK colour, 3 mm bleed on all sides, text outlined, images at 300 dpi or higher. Foil and spot UV need separate spot-colour layers.
Do I pay for tooling again on reorder?
No. Your cutting die is stored in our die shop and is not re-charged.
Start with a free white sample. Prefer to see the floor first? We run live video walkthroughs of the die shop, the coating line and the assembly bench — in real time, no slideshow. |
